Grey trim ages a clean car instantly
It's the first thing people notice on an otherwise tidy vehicle. Send a photo of yours and we'll price it as an add-on.
What It Fixes
Grey, chalky plastic trim β brought back to black
Unpainted plastic trim fades for the same reason headlights do: years of UV, road salt and grit break down the surface of the plastic. Bumper trim, mirror caps, cowl panels below the windshield, fender flares and roof rails all go from black to a dusty, washed-out grey. It's the fastest way for an otherwise clean car to look old.
Most trim products are dressings. They sit on top of the plastic, look wet and glossy for a week or two, then wash off and leave you back where you started β often with a greasy residue that streaks down the paint in the first rain.
Good candidates for trim restoration
- Faded black bumper trim and lower body cladding
- Chalky mirror caps and door handles
- The cowl panel between the hood and windshield
- Fender flares and roof rails on trucks and SUVs
- Grey, sun-baked plastic on ATVs and UTVs
The Process
How the trim job actually goes
The prep is the part that decides whether a coating lasts, and it's the part most DIY kits skip entirely.
Deep clean the plastic
Old dressings, wax residue and embedded grime all have to come off. Nothing bonds to a surface that still has silicone on it.
Decontaminate and dry
The trim is stripped back to bare, dry plastic so the coating can reach into the pores rather than sit on a film.
Apply the ceramic coating
Worked in evenly, panel by panel, then levelled before it starts to flash. Uneven application is what causes blotchy trim.
Cure and inspect
It hardens into a protective layer rather than staying oily. We check it in daylight with you before packing up.
Why This Instead
A bonded coating, not a shine in a bottle
The difference between this and the trim gel from the auto parts store is where the product ends up.
It bonds in
The coating cures into the pores of the plastic and forms a hard layer, instead of resting on the surface waiting for rain.
Satin, not greasy
The finish is a deep, even satin black β closer to how the trim looked new than the wet look a dressing gives.
Rated past 200 washes
It's built to survive seasons of washing and weather rather than the week or two a dressing manages.
Worth Knowing
Why faded trim comes back so fast with dressings
If you've re-dressed the same bumper trim three times this year, this is why.
A dressing is a temporary film. It darkens the plastic by wetting it, and as soon as that film washes off the grey is still underneath β because the actual damage is in the surface of the plastic, not on it.
- UV breaks the surface down. The same process that yellows a headlight lens chalks out unpainted trim.
- Salt and grit accelerate it. Winter roads in Orange County are hard on every exterior plastic on the vehicle.
- Dressings wash off. They also streak down paint in the rain, which is its own annoyance.
- Prep decides longevity. A coating over old dressing residue fails early no matter how good the coating is.
Pricing
Priced per vehicle, from a photo
There's no flat rate, because trim varies enormously between vehicles β a couple of mirror caps is a different job from full fender flares and cladding.
Text a picture of the trim you want done along with your vehicle, and you'll get a firm add-on price before anything starts.
- Cleaned, decontaminated and coated
- Deep satin black finish
- Added to a headlight restoration visit
- No second trip, no extra travel charge
- Firm price agreed before we start
This is a secondary service. The 2-year warranty applies to headlight restoration specifically β trim restoration is quoted and warranted separately, and we'll be straight with you about what the coating will and won't do on badly damaged plastic.

Honest about what trim work can achieve
I'm Richard. Trim that's chalky will come back beautifully. Trim that's physically distorted, cracked or has been painted over is a different conversation, and I'd rather have it before you pay than after.
Since I'm already at your vehicle for the headlights, adding this costs you nothing in travel and nothing in a second appointment.
